Carroll Knutson WWII B-17 Pilot

We are honored to have as our May speaker Carroll Knutson a 91 year old WWII veteran.

His story is of valor, laced with terror and patriotic service to our country as a B-17 Co-pilot. He completed his pilot training in Dalhart, TX, in March, 1944. Later from Kearney, NE he and his crew ferried there B-17 to England. He was assigned to the 447th Bomb Group. During their final mission they were shot down over Hannover, Germany. The entire crew parachuted to safety. Carrol sustained a leg injury and today still walks with a limp. He was interned in Stalag Luft 3 as a POW until rescue at the end of WWII. Since he spent most of his tour as a POW he will share his life in two Stalags, one in Poland the other in Germany. For perspective there were 20,000 American servicemen interned during WWII in Europe. Many died.

He holds the Air Medal, POW Medal, WWII Victory medal and the Presidential Unit Citation.

Carroll has a BS, MS and PHD from Stanford University with majors in Geology. He has also written many books and papers related to geology.

Please join us to witness Carroll’s exceptional story of service to our country.
