Rear Admiral Thomas Stone was raised in the Washington, D.C. area and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1962.
He served as a Surface Warfare Officer in a variety of afloat billets onboard several ships including USS Saufley (EDDE 465), USS Cone (DD 866), USS Sampson (DDG 10), USS Mitscher (DDG 35) and command of USS Preble DDG 46. He also served on several aircraft carriers while assigned to afloat staffs such as Commander, Attack Carrier Group Five/ CTF 77 during the Vietnam War and Commander Cruiser, Destroyer Group 12 deployed to the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean,
Rear Admiral Stone attended the Naval Postgraduate School and graduated with a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering and was designated as a Communications Engineer. He served in Communications and Command and Control billets on several shore staffs including command of the U.S. Naval Communications Area Master Station, Western Pacific in Guam.
He was selected for promotion to Rear Admiral in 1988 and served as the first Commander of the Naval Computer and Telecommunications Command then as the Director, Naval Communications on the Chief of Naval Operations staff and finally as the Program Director, Communications Systems at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command.
Rear Admiral Stone retired from the Navy in August 1993. He joined American Systems Corporation of Chantilly, Virginia as a Director of Technical Support for various business programs. He was later promoted to Vice President to develop and lead West Coast programs. He retired from that company in July 2004.
Rear Admiral Stone’s military decorations include three Legions of Merit, two Meritorious Service medals, the Navy Commendation and Navy Achievement medals, a Presidential Unit Citation, two Navy Unit and three Meritorious Unit Commendations plus several campaign and service medals.
Rear Admiral Stone is married to his wife of 54 years, the former Lucy Lee of Washington, D.C. and they live in Sun City Anthem, Henderson, Nevada. They have three children and five grand children.
