Happy New Year from the SCA Veterans Club

Happy New Year !
From the
Sun City Anthem Veterans Club - Board of Directors
Thank you for your support in 2011. We had a wonderful year! In case you missed any of our meetings…here are some highlights
In keeping with our Mission to support our veterans and their families, we provided financial and “people hours” support to the USO, the Blue Star & Gold Star Mothers. Over 75% of the club’s income (from Dues and Ice Cream Social) goes to support veterans in some way.
The club had some very informative as well as inspirational speakers in 2011.
Many of our speakers were local Sun City Anthem residents who shared some of their military experiences with us…..
• Ron Williams shared his experience as a u-2 pilot during the Cold War.
• Brian Abbott gave us insights to the Civil Air Patrol.
• George Zielsdorff discussed his role with the Stealth program.
• Sonny Sonnenfeld (WWII – Silver Star recipient) shared his experience in the Pacific.
We invited local VA representatives to some meetings to keep us current on Veterans services in Las Vegas area. This includes VA hospital services, USO, Henderson Vet Center…
We were fortune enough to bring in some special guest speakers such as Major General Jack Kulpa (retired) for our Flag Day meeting in June and Rear Admiral “Bear” Taylor (retired) as our keynote speaker on Veterans Day.
We kicked off our own “Freedom Is Not Free” program as a result of Aletta Waterhouse’s discussion at our September meeting. We have interviewed a number of our WWII and Korean War veterans thus far…and their interviews are being sent to the Library of Congress for the Veteran History Project.
As for inspiration, June Scobee-Rodgers (wife of Dick Scobee, Challenger Commander) inspired us all with her talk about her life before and after the Challenger disaster.
We were very proud to introduce our Color Guard to the community this year under the direction of Herb Solomon.
And lastly, we had another successful Ice Cream Social in August….a great social event!
Again…thanks for your support and we look forward to seeing many of you at our upcoming meetings on the 2nd Tuesday of each month @ 7:00pm in the Delaware Room.
